2011 Porsche Boxster S – Paintwork Correction Detail

RGK Detailing • April 3, 2014

This two year old Porsche Boxster S was a recent purchase for the current owner, unfortunately he noticed numerous defects in the paint finish, light scratches and unsightly swirl marks in bright light, also in general the car was not as clean as it could be, the fabric roof was in desperate need of deep cleaning, as well as the panel gaps around the boot and bonnet which had never been cleaned since the car was new.

On arrival this is how the car looked.

Lots of stubborn grime build up, and polish residue on the fabric roof due to someone trying to quickly polish the car in the past, so the car was snow foamed and allowed to soak in and loosen the grime, this was then rinsed off and the roof was gently cleaned.

Intricate areas cleaned.

Wheels cleaned, both the face and behind the spokes, Fallout remover was used to help remove the large amount of Iron deposits present.

The roof after cleaning, there are still some fibres to be removed once the car is inside the workshop.

As part of my usual process the car was also clayed, and had any tar spots removed, however this was not pictured, the Boxster was then moved indoors so I could have a closer look at the paint defects, and begin refurbishing the paintwork, the following series of pictures shows the difference made before and after.

Glue residue was present around the rear stone chip guards, so this was tidied up

Its now time to have a closer look at the offside front wing, this panel had some very unsightly machine holograms dulling the finish, usually caused by someone running over the panel quickly using a rotary polisher and and aggressive compound without taking any care to properly refine the finish, however more worryingly on closer inspection I noticed ghost like marks in the finish where whoever last polished this panel has began to strike through the clear coat, it became obvious that a scratch had been touched in then wet sanded flat, however too much paint was removed as shown in the image below, there is also another strike through near the top of the wing where whoever done this has polished the panel far too aggressively.

Numerous paint depth readings were also taken which also confirmed that the paint is very thin in these areas.

And this reading shows the average throughout the rest of the car.

So with such low readings I was limited as to what I could with this panel, so I opted to carry out a very light refining set to remove the machine holograms and enhance the gloss whilst removing very little extra clearcoat.

303 Fabric guard was applied to the hood at the beginning of the detail and left for 4 days to fully bond with the materiel, this allows water and dirt to be repelled as shown in the image below.

After cleaning and polishing, all unpainted trim was cleaned and dressed, wheel sealant applied, tyres dressed, glass cleaned and polished with a dedicated glass polish, and the paint was sealed with Wolfgang Deep Gloss Paint sealant, for durable protection during the winter months.

The finished shots

The interior also received attention as although clean, dirt had built up in all the little areas such as around the air vents, and gaps in the trim, dirt and grime had also builtup in the leather seats over the past two years.

Before

And after some deep cleansing.

In total this detail took 60 hours to complete safely to a high standard, to find out about having similar work carried out on your own car please call myself on 07500903249.
