1987 VW Scirocco GTX – Exterior Protection – Interior, Engine Bay Detail

RGK Detailing • January 2, 2016

The owner of this lovely example of a VW Scirocco GTX contacted me after having the car fully restored, It had spent many years parked outside with its previous owner which had taken its toll on the paintwork and interior as the window had also been left open over this time, so the car was treated to a full bare metal respray

The quality of the restoration was excellent, and has one of the best paint jobs i have seen in a while, the owner just wanted the car to look its very best, and knew with the right care and attention the Scirocco would look even sharper,

Upon inspecting the car, a protection detail was decided on, with local paint correction in a couple of areas where the paint was a little cloudy following the flatting and polishing stages after the respray, although the original interior was thoroughly cleaned during the restoration it was obvious that further improvement could be made so the interior would be steam cleaned to ensure any signs of dampness was fully removed, and all the surfaces were as clean as possible, the engine bay would also be steam cleaned to remove the traces of baked on grease.

On arrival this is how the car looked

The Scirocco underwent my usual very thorough wash and decontamination process which takes on average 4 hours, wheel arches and wheels cleaned first of all, followed by snow foaming and washing the bodywork with a sheepskin washmitt and two buckets to limit inflicting any wash marring on the paint finish, any road tar and iron dust was then removed, door shuts cleaned, and any loose dirt and dust was carefully rinsed away from the engine bay, the car was then moved indorrs and claybarred to remove any remaining bonded contaminants.

Scirocco moved inside, and the engine bay was steam cleaned,

With the engine bay cleaned it was time to start work on the bodywork, caked on polish residue was first removed from various areas on the car as shown in this example here,

After correction

Faded taillights polished

The rest of the car was given a very light machine polish to maximise the gloss and clarity of the paint finish, the unpainted plastics and rubber trim of which there was alot, was carefully cleaned and dressed using an old favourite of mine Autoglym bumper gel, The wax Zymol Titantium was applied to the paint using a Duel Action polisher to ensure even coverage, as pictured below,

Finished shots of the exterior,

For the interior every area was steam cleaned and dusted, seat runners, dashboard, air vents, carpets, seats, head lining, parcel shelf, boot carpet, door cards, and the steering wheel, the interior looked clean from a distance, but still a fair amount of dirt was removed during the steaming process, this also kills bacteria helping to remove the slight musty smell from the interior.

If you would like your classic car to undergo a similar treatment then please do not hesitate to get in touch.
